PROM TIPS FOR GIRLS

Prom Tips for Girls

The Prom is the one of the most special evenings for high school students around the world; a night you will remember for the rest of your life. There are so many things you can do with your friends and Prom date to make the evening a fun one.

Traditionally, both you and your date dress up, coordinating your outfits, buy each other corsages, ride in a limousine and have dinner before attending the Prom. Girls will get their hair and makeup professionally done, and wear a Prom dress, while boys will often hire a tuxedo for the night.

Some of the questions teenagers ask are: How much will the evening cost? What are some ideas to make the evening more fun? What should I do to prepare for things not going as planned?

It is important to start planning your evening with your friends or Prom date at least three or four months in advance, to best be able to maximize your time and money.

How much will the evening cost?

Your Prom night can vary in cost, between $150 to as much as $1500. However with planning and some wise choices, you won't need to spend a fortune to have a good time. Remember it is your night and ultimately, your money so choose items and activities that you want.

These are some things that will probably be part of your evening's expenses.

  • Ticket
The cost of the ticket will vary between schools. If your school holds the Prom in the school gymnasiums, the cost of the ticket may be as low as $20 per couple. However, most high schools hold their Junior-Senior Prom off campus at a country club, hotel or ballroom facility. In these cases Prom tickets can cost between $50-$150 per couple.

  • Dinner
Often dinner is included in the more expensive ticket prices. This means you can spend the entire evening at the Prom itself, with your friends. If you Prom ticket does not include dinner, you may book a table at a nice restaurant for a group of friends, or just a romantic table for you and your Prom date. Make your reservation ahead of time to ensure seating. You may also want to inform the restaurant that you are attending a Prom after dinner, and ask them to have your meals served by a certain time so you won%u2019t be late. The cost of dinner can vary greatly, depending on the restaurant, and because Prom night can be expensive most students try to split the costs as evenly as possible. Dinner can cost between $15-$25 per person.

  • Limousine
If you dinner and Prom are held in different locations, you may consider getting a limousine to ride in. This can be a very expensive optional extra for your Prom night, however it can be fun and affordable if three or four couples all go together. The standard cost for a limo starts at around $400 for the evening.

  • Prom Dress/Evening Gown
Every year the style of prom dresses vary, so if you aren't sure what you, it might be handy to look in magazines and stores in about February. Give yourself enough time to decide what style of dress you will want to wear. If you have an idea for a style of dress, your first option would be going to a dressmaker. You will be able to describe what you want, pick out the fabric, and ensure that it fits your body just right. However, a dressmaker can be very expensive. Another, safer, option is to buy a dress from a shop. There are many speciality stores that sell evening gowns and formal wear. The cost may vary from store to store, but if you start shopping early you may be able to find a dress on sale or at an outlet store. Usually a dress will cost anywhere between $75- $250.

  • Boutonneire
A boutonneire is usually a pin-on carnation or rose with baby's breath to be worn on the right lapel. You may want to order this the same time your date orders your corsage, as some florists will give you a slightly cheaper deal if you are ordering two items together. A boutonniere will cost $5-$15.

  • Photographs
Photos from your Prom night will be a keepsake for years to come, so it is worthwhile to get a few professional shots of you, your Prom date and friends. There will be a photographer at the Prom, and although these picture packages can often be a bit expensive, most photographers will accept checks or credit cards. Your parents and relatives may want copies, so remember to calculate those needs into your picture order. You may spend anywhere from $50-$175 for photos. Perhaps you can consider taking your own camera to the Prom for informal shots of you and your friends.

  • Hair/Nails/Make Up
Most girls will have one or all three of these items done professionally for Prom night. To get a good idea of what is in style and what you like look at magazines and on television. Book for these services in advance to make sure you get an appointment at the time that best suits you.

    Nails
You can get extensions, such as acrylic or gel tips, a French manicure or a professional manicure. Depending where you live and what you have done, this can cost $10-$50.

    Makeup
Many salons do professional makeup for events. Be confident and communicate what you want to look like, and don't be afraid to tell them to do it again if they mess up. Most makeup artists charge $20-50. Another option is to go to a makeup counter in a department store. If you make arrangements in advance, they will often apply your makeup for free if you buy some of their products. This may not be that much cheaper but you will now have new makeup.
